Ahead of Sunday's Barclays WSL trip to Manchester United, we caught up with Spanish midfielder Bruna Vilamala, who talked about adapting to English football and her ambitions for the second half of the season.
Bruna, where did your love for the game start?
“All my family love football. My mum maybe a bit less but she had to go to so much football with my sister and I that she ended up liking it as much as all of us.
“All the family are Barçelona fans. When I signed for Barca it was a dream for me and I had a great experience growing up with Barca.
“I learned all their values, which go well beyond football. When you are so young the values become part of you."
You had a serious knee injury which kept you out of football for a year. How tough was that personally?
“All of us who play football or do any sport know there are injuries. I haven’t had much luck with them during my short career but I see it as a form of learning. You learn to enjoy what you have in the moment. I do a lot of work to be good on the pitch. I have a plan in the gym and feel like the injury never happened.”
How have you dealt with the difference between the English and Spanish league?
“It is a lot more physical than the Spanish League which is a challenge for me. I have to learn and adapt to this but I feel better all the time.
"In Spain, the game is a lot more controlled, and a lot more tactical. Here it is back and forth, back and forth. There is a lot more transition play so it's a lot more physical in this sense.
“I’ve always loved Barca since I was young. I fell in love with the Barça of Xavi, Iniesta, Mess and the football they played.
“It was a football I have always liked and it's what we try to play at Brighton: to have the ball, to have possession and to attack. This style represents me a lot and I feel so comfortable here.
“When we started to have contact with Brighton last summer about coming to the club they told me their intention to bring this style to this league."
What are your ambitions for your time at the club?
“I want us to be as high up the table as possible and go far in the FA Cup. We don’t give anything up as lost. Hopefully this season could be the first one with a trophy for Brighton’s women.”
"When I came here, the target was to be in the upper places of the league and we've achieved this. We have had a really good first part of the season, winning lots of matches, taking lots of points. The first part of the season was almost perfect. Now we have to keep working and have the same results until the end of the season."
