A really strong second half from Albion, but a sucker punch right at the end sees them leave Villa Park empty handed.

Harry Howell swings in a brilliant ball from the right, which Mings heads over his own goal. Albion have been terrific in this half.

Yankuba Minteh, Babis Kostoulas and Harry Howell replace Danny Welbeck, Kaoru Mitoma and Diego Gomez.

James Milner capitalises on Douglas Luiz not controlling the ball in the box and curls it towards goal, Martinez can only palm it back into his own six-yard box and it forces Maatsen to smash the ball behind for a corner.

Villa pour forward and for a moment it looks as if Rogers is on goal, but Boscagli flies into a challenge and gets the ball cleared. Really good defending.

Diego Gomez wins possession in his own half and then bursts forward. Luiz tries to pull his shirt but the Paraguayan carries on before finding Mitoma. He plays it out to the right for Gross who has a cross blocked, Hinshelwood gets onto it but rifles over the crossbar from the edge of the box!

Gross swings a cross in, Milner dives like a salmon to meet it, but it's just beyond the former Villa midfielder and Martinez can gather!

That's a good chance. Mitoma crosses in from the left and finds Gross at the back post, he's stretching to get there and just about gets his toe on it, but he can't get a proper connection and it's behind for a goal-kick. This game is opening up.

Jan Paul van Hecke is replaced by Olivier Boscagli.

Fabulous effort from the Turkey international. Welbeck tees up the full back to hit it from 20 yards and he makes great contact, driving it towards the top left corner, but Martinez actually gets the slightest touch to tip it onto the woodwork! The closest we've come to a goal tonight.

Morgan Rogers keeps pulling at the shirt of Kaoru Mitoma and eventually Peter Bankes stops play and books the Villa man.

Gross plays the ball down the left for Mitoma, cutting the Villa defence apart. The Japan international cuts onto his right and bends it just narrowly wide of the bottom right. Good start to this half.

Villa get us back underway.

Nothing to separate the teams after 45 minutes.

Albion win the ball high up, Mitoma passes it to Welbeck on the edge, but his strike is straight into the gloves of Martinez.

A touch off the thigh of Joel Veltman steers Buendia's drive from the edge of the box closer to goal, but it's inches wide of the bottom left corner. The hosts are awarded a corner.

Jan Paul van Hecke and Emi Martinez have a coming together. They're separated by their teammates. Both are yellow carded.

Albion are given a free-kick just inside the Villa half. Gross sends it into the box looking for Dunk, but Onana heads it behind for a corner. Gross takes, but Martinez gathers.

Joel Veltman slides in on Emi Buendia, it's a great tackle. He gets the ball and then Buendia goes down in a heap. The ref stops play and books Joel. It shouldn't even be a foul.

Martinez sends a brilliant ball down the right for Sancho. Mitoma does well to block his initial cross, but the Villa winger pops it to Rogers who thumps it at goal from a tight angle, which Verbruggen parries, before the Villa man blasts his second bite of the cherry well over the goal.

Maatsen gets down the left and puts a decent ball into the box for Watkins to meet, but he heads wide to the right of goal.

Sancho's cross from the right takes a nick off Kadioglu and is heading towards the top left corner, which means Verbruggen is forced to tip it over for a corner.

Albion must have had about six throw-ins on the right of the Villa half in this opening five minutes. Two have been foul throws, one because he stepped onto the pitch and the other for the way he threw it.

An early booking for Carlos Baleba, as he gets a hold of Morgan Rogers's shirt as the Villa midfielder bursts through the middle with the ball.
