Steven Hall was Australia under-20s’ penalty shootout hero as he helped his country secure their first-ever U20 Asian Cup.
Having played out a 1-1 draw in normal and extra-time against Saudi Arabia, Hall pulled off a terrific one handed save in the shootout to deny Bassam Hazazi.
“When I got up [after saving the penalty], I saw the team and the rest of the boys running towards me, I was just lost for words. It was just a fantastic feeling and I am over the moon,” the 20-year-old said after the game.
Taking place in China, the Young Socceroos finished top of Group A with wins against China, Qatar and Kyrgyzstan, before beating Iraq and Japan in the knockout stages.
In the final, Perugia midfielder Louis Agosti gave the Aussies the lead midway through the first half, before Saudi Arabia pulled one back just before half-time thanks to Talal Haji.
The following 45 minutes and an additional 30 minutes couldn’t split the teams, before Australia scored all five of their spot-kicks, with Hall having his big moment as he denied Saudi’s fifth taker.
