Josh Duffus scored four goals as our men’s under-21s beat Bournemouth 5-1 in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday afternoon.

The 19-year-old – who made his first team debut against AEK Athens in the Europa League last season – put us in front after 12 minutes when he arrowed a strike from a tight angle into the top right corner.

Harry Howell and Adrian Mazilu had efforts from just inside the area comfortably dealt with before Duffus added his second with 29 minutes played. Charlie Tasker’s shot, which looked bound for the bottom left corner, was well saved – but Duffus was first to the loose ball and rolled it home.

Mazilu set-up the goal that secured Duffus his hat-trick as he got to the byline and pulled it back into the middle of the box for the striker, who controlled, swivelled and slammed home from ten yards.

Josh wasn’t quite finished there though, as he made it 4-0 just before half-time. Sahil Bashir’s cross from the right of the box took a nick and Duffus was at the back post to slide in.

Four became five 12 minutes after the break when Bashir cut in from the right and shot. His strike was too powerful for the Bournemouth goalkeeper, who got a hand to the ball but couldn’t prevent it from hitting the back of the net.

The Cherries would get their consolation goal when Remy Rees-Dottin reacted quickest to a loose ball which had bounced off the post to nod in from close range.

The under-21s squad will be in action again this evening as they take on Hastings United at The Pilot Field, kick-off 7.45pm.
