After working for Brighton and Hove’s daily newspaper, The Argus, for over 30 years and covering the club, Andy joined The Athletic in August 2019.
Andy considers himself fortunate to have covered Albion’s remarkable journey from major highlights like playing in Europe to darker times like the game at Hereford in 1997 when survival as a Football League club was at stake.
“I've always said about Brighton that – without being disrespectful – there a lot of [other] clubs that I look at throughout the country and I think ‘wow, that must be hard work to cover and must be pretty dull, because nothing ever seems to happen’.

“Look at the Brighton story, it's been absolutely extraordinary right from the Goldstone days. I can remember going to the old Doncaster stadium and balancing my laptop on an oil drum to do my report and going to Macclesfield [working] in a press box that had window frames but no actual glass. That was the kind of environment Brighton were in as a club back in those days. And look at them now, it is quite amazing what's happened at this club.
“I never lose sight of how fortunate I am, going to a game in the Premier League [working] in a very comfortable environment with a good view and that is my job. I count myself pretty lucky.”
