Our head of medicine discusses his path to the Albion.

Albion’s head of medicine Professor Doctor Florian Pfab is the latest guest on the Official Brighton & Hove Albion Podcast.

The German’s previous clubs include Bayern Munich, Ingolstadt and Eintracht Frankfurt, before he made the move to Albion this summer. On the podcast he outlined the early part of his career before going full-time into sports medicine.

“It's been a long journey,” he said. “I started studying dermatology because I wanted to do non-operative medicine. Back then, dermatology was something that appealed to me. I finished my degree and I was a specialist in dermatology.

“I was just very lucky that I had also done acupuncture during my medical school studies and Bayern Munich were looking for an acupuncturist.

“I had just finished medical school and went into Bayern Munich!

“That was in 2003. Being at Bayern Munich I was so passionate about football and professional sports that in parallel to my dermatology studies I started studying sports medicine and finished my sports medical degree as well.

“Then I only went fully into sports medicine. I was at Bayern Munich until 2010, then I received a scholarship from Harvard Medical School to do research in Boston.

“So half my time was allocated to research and I spent the other half in Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) with the sports medical department. The MGH used to host the Bruins, the Patriots, the Red Sox and New England Revolution.

“I got to sit on the bench for Revolution, which was a great experience. Then coming back from the States to Germany I made the complete switch into sports medicine.”
