Albion’s loanees abroad stole the show over the last week with Abdallah Sima and Ibrahim Osman scoring goals to secure big wins for their teams.
Sima is enjoying life in France with Stade Brest, and he took his tally to seven goals in 20 appearances this season by opening the scoring in a 2-1 win against Nantes before getting an assist in their 2-1 victory at Stade Rennais.
The success against Nantes safely saw Les Pirates through to the Coupe de France Round of 16, while the swashbuckling win in Rennes three days later lifted Sima’s side up to ninth in the French top tier.
Osman was also wearing his scoring boots on foreign shores as Feyenoord comfortably beat Rijnsburgse Boys 4-1 in the KNVB Cup, with our striker sweeping home the final goal of the night after a superb solo run.
That win for the Dutch giants to set up a huge quarter-final tie against PSV – a derby known as De Kraker – but before then, attention turned back to league action with Osman playing the final eight minutes as his team drew 1-1 at Willem II in Eredivisie.
There was also action for Kjell Scherpen and Malick Yalcouye, as Sturm Graz prepared for their return to Champions League action against Atalanta during Austria’s winter break with a friendly against HNK Rijeka. Our duo played 74 minutes and 90 in a 2-0 defeat.
Back in Britain, Carl Rushworth made his first Championship appearance of the season to help Hull claim a vital 1-0 win at Millwall in the battle of Tigers v Lions.
Our on-loan goalkeeper has struggled with an injury this term but was between the sticks at The New Den to keep a clean sheet and help lift Bruno Selles’s side out of the relegation zone.
After the match, Rushworth told Hull’s official website, “I am really proud of the lads because every single one of them put their bodies on the line.
“I am really thankful for them and their hard work. We knew we had the ability; it was about the lads being together and the togetherness in the squad.”
There was also second tier success for Amario Cozier-Duberry during the week as he played 34 minutes for Blackburn in their 3-0 win against Portsmouth – which Mark O’Mahony missed through injury – but at the weekend, Roves lost 1-0 at Oxford with our winger playing an hour.
James Beadle also tasted defeat in the Championship as Sheffield Wednesday lost a fiery Yorkshire derby against Leeds United at Elland Road, while Andrew Moran’s Stoke settled for a point against West Brom with the Irishman playing the full 90.
Burnley and Jeremy Sarmiento also had to be happy with a draw after hosting Sunderland at Turf Moor. The match finished 0-0, with our Ecuadorian international playing the final 23 minutes, but Clarets keeper James Trafford was the hero as he saved two penalties.

In the league above, Facundo Buonannotte was on the losing side twice as Leicester went down 2-1 to Crystal Palace and 0-2 against Fulham, with the Argentine playing 66 and 19 minutes, while in the league below, Odel Offiah helped Blackpool draw 2-2 with high-flying Huddersfield.
Offiah played the full 90 in League One for the Tangerines but in the same division, Samy Chouchane only lasted 45 minutes as a knock saw him come off in Northampton’s 1-0 defeat to Lincoln.
Further down the footballing pyramid, Tom McGill couldn’t prevent MK Dons from losing 4-2 to League Two leaders Walsall while Louis Flower made his National League debut for Gateshead.
The striker came on for the final 23 minutes against Halifax last Tuesday, but Heed lost 3-1, and then the former Chelsea man started and played 68 minutes of Friday’s 0-0 draw with Yeovil.
Women’s Super League 2
Lily Dent and Hannah Poulter were in action for Portsmouth on Sunday, with Dent fresh from winning the WSL 2 Goal of the Month award and Poulter making her Pompey debut after joining on Saturday, but our South Coast counterparts lost 3-1 to Birmingham.
That victory moved the Blues three points clear of Libby Bance’s Bristol City, who saw their promotion push dealt a blow by fellow high-flyers, London City Lionesses.
In a top of the table clash with saw second play third, Bance started but was subbed off as the Robins lost 1-0.
