Head coach reflects on Saturday's 1-1 draw against West Ham United.

Fabian Hurzeler felt the 1-1 draw at West Ham represented two points dropped rather than one gained.

A third draw in the last five Premier League matches – when Albion have surrendered the lead on each occasion – saw Mohammed Kudus cancel out Mats Wieffer’s first for the club with both goals coming in the space of six second-half minutes at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Hurzeler said, “[I think it is] two points lost in the end, as we had plenty of big chances but we weren’t able to score the second goal or to keep a clean sheet. We got punished for one mistake. It was our fault that we didn’t leave the pitch the winner so we’re disappointed, we controlled the game good in the second half.

“There were positive things, but you need to get results in these type of games if you want to achieve something.”

Albion have now surrendered the lead against Southampton, Leicester and the Hammers in recent games and Hurzeler says his players need to learn as a collective from a frustrating experience.

“There are always more than one reason for this,” he added. “It’s a process for the whole team to learn from so I won’t point the finger at individual mistakes. We can defend the high pressure that their goal came from better, we have to be more compact.

“At the moment it’s a circle of bad experiences. But no one will help us, we have to work ourselves to get back this winning mentality. We have to learn to be more mature when we take the lead and manage the game.

“But we will keep going, invest more in the detail and get back to a high standard by doing the basic things better. We have to keep moving forward. These things happen in waves, we have to catch a forward wave.”
