Jeremy Sarmiento helped Burnley cause something of an FA Cup upset as Albionâs loanees endured a weekend of mixed results.
While there are only three league positions in the footballing pyramid separating Sarmientoâs Clarets and the Saints, a Championship team going away to a Premier League side and winning always raises a few eyebrows and Saturdayâs result at St Maryâs was no different.
Our Ecuadorian played for 83 minutes as Scott Parkerâs side beat our south coast counterparts 1-0 to extend their run of clean sheets to five matches. Sarmiento impressed in an advanced role and went close to opening the scoring in the first half, before Marcus Edwards won it for the Championship promotion chasers late on.
Elsewhere in the worldâs oldest cup competition, Facundo Buonanotte came on for the final nine minutes of Leicesterâs 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, while Amario Cozier-Duberry played an hour for Blackburn as they lost 2-0 against Wolves and Andrew Moran missed Stokeâs defeat to Cardiff on penalties due to injury.
There was also defeat in the Womenâs FA Cup for Lily Dent and Hannah Poulter as their Portsmouth side lost 2-0 at home to Sunderland.
Away from the FA Cup, James Beadle was in Championship action for Sheffield Wednesday but the Owls lost 2-1 at high-flying West Brom and in the league below, Odel Offiah, Kamari Doyle and Caylan Vickers were also winless over the weekend.
Offiah played the first 77 minutes of Blackpoolâs 1-1 draw with Burton, Doyle claimed an assist on his full Crawley debut but couldnât prevent the Red Devils from losing 4-3 against Bolton and Vickers was on for the full 90 as Mansfield lost 1-0 at home to Northampton.
Stefanos Tzimas helped Nuremburg win a seven-goal thriller against Magdeburg. đˇ James Boardman.
There was more success in League Two for Luca Barrington and Grimsby as the Mariners beat Carlisle 2-1 at home with Barrington playing the final three minutes, while Louis Flower and Gateshead were 4-0 victors in the National League against Wealdstone.
There were also domestic victories abroad for our players with Stefanos Tzimas starting and finishing Nurembergâs thrilling 4-3 victory at Magdeburg, Abdallah Sima playing 77 minutes of Stade Brestâs 2-0 win against Nantes and Valentin Barco on for over an hour of Strasbourgâs 2-0 victory against Montpellier.
Ibrahim Osmanâs Feyenoord also won as they beat Sparta Rotterdam 3-0, but our striker was an unused substitute, while Kjell Scherpen and Malick Yalcouye had to settle for a point in the Austrian Bundesliga as Sturm Graz drew 2-2 with Austrian Wien, with our duo both playing the full 90.
