Diego Gomez admits his focus is already on Sunday’s FA Cup tie after making an impressive full Premier League debut on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old Paraguay midfielder impressed in the 2-1 win over Bournemouth, particularly in the first half when his ability to regain possession and pick out a pass caught the eye. All in front of his national team head coach Gustavo Alfaro, whom Gomez spoke to after the game.
Assessing his performance, Gomez said: “We were very happy with the win and for me it was good to get more minutes and to start the game.
“It was a very difficult match. We knew they are playing well and fortunately we got a great win. I always work hard to do my best and help the team and luckily my first half was quite good.
“The second half was more difficult because they got on top of us with a lot of intensity, but we got the win. I felt a bit tired because it’s 2-3 months since I was a starter so I need to keep working and giving my best.
“You have to always keep going with humility and with a positive mind, thinking of the next match. Newcastle will be very competitive, they are on a good run.”
Gomez says he has already formed good relationships with his teammates and is grateful for the support of the experienced players in the squad.
“Joao [Pedro] and Mitoma help me a lot," he added. "They speak to me about what to do. The team helps me a lot. It’s a young team and we listen to the experienced players who are with us.”
