Albion have been awarded the city’s highest honour in recognition of their exceptional service to the local community.
The Freedom of the City was presented to chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber at the Amex, and the award was unanimously supported by Brighton & Hove City councillors across all political parties.
The ceremonial honour recognises the club’s historic sporting achievements and our outstanding contribution to the city. Councillors highlighted the many community and charity contributions Albion have made to Brighton & Hove as well as our progress on the pitch, including our first European campaign last season.
Paul received the award on behalf of the club from Cllr. Bella Sankey, the leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, and Leslie Pumm, cabinet member for Communities, Equalities and Human Rights.

He said, “The Freedom of the City award is a wonderful honour for the club, and it’s great to know the whole of the community in Brighton and Hove is behind us.
“Our achievements, particularly in the last few years, have helped promote the club and the city across the world and this is something we are very proud of.
“We are delighted to accept this honour and we look forward to our relationship with Brighton & Hove City Council growing even stronger in the future.”
Councillor Bella Sankey, Leader of the Council, said, “Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club has a long history serving the city, bringing joy, pride and inspiration to generations of residents.
“As a Brightonian and lifelong fan I’ve watched with delight as the Seagulls have soared to success over the past few years. And as the Leader of the Council I’m proud of how the club’s success has contributed to the local economy and boosted the profile of Brighton & Hove off the pitch.
“Despite a well-earned and growing global profile, the club continues to show its commitment to grassroots sports and inclusivity within our local communities.
“I’m delighted to have granted Freedom of the City – our city’s highest honour - and let the club know that the whole city is behind them, now and as they continue to thrive and grow.”
