Billy Gilmour says Albion will try to ‘get the job done’ when the Europa League group stage reaches a thrilling climax at the Amex tonight.
The midfielder is hoping to play his part against Marseille with Albion needing a win to top Group B whereas a draw will be enough for the French side.
If Albion finish second they will go into a two-legged play-off for a place in the last 16 at the end of February.
“It’s going be a tough, tough game,” said Gilmour. “They're a good team with good players, but we are confident in ourselves. We’ve been working this week on Marseille and I think it will be a good match and hopefully we can put the game plan right and get the job done.
“Is it an advantage having to win the game? We go into every game trying to win and tomorrow there’s no point drawing.”
Albion’s Europa League campaign took off after they came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Marseille in October. They have won all three games since to reach the knockout stages with a game to spare and Gilmour believes Albion have matured.
“I think the first two games was a difficult experience but when we went to Marseille, it kind of clicked. We knew what we had to do to perform at this level and I think the two Ajax games as well were really good for us with two wins and clean sheets.
“There’s not been an easier game in this competition so for us to kick on and keep learning and keep improving and hopefully we can go as far as we can in the competition.”
Gilmour has something in common with Marseille coach Gennaro Gattuso, who played 32 games for Rangers in 1997/98.
“I've watched YouTube clips of Gattuso," added Gilmour. "My Grandad always told me about the old players at Rangers. Gattuso was a very aggressive player and also a very good player with the ball – he was a top player for Rangers.”
