Billy Gilmour was delighted to operate in a new role against Aston Villa and hopes it helps Albion to finish the season strongly.
The 22-year-old played in a deeper role in front of central defenders Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster and helped restrict Villa – the sixth-highest scorers in the Premier League this season - to just two shots as Albion won 1-0 last weekend.
“I’ve enjoyed the season a lot,” said Gilmour. “I’ve played more which has given me confidence and against Villa I almost played as a third centre-back, just in front of Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster.
"It’s a different role but I enjoyed it. We did it so we could keep a clean sheet and win the game – Me, Webby and Dunky as a back three!”
Billy Gilmour played a deeper role against Villa last weekend.
Victory lifted us to 11th and Gilmour says the squad believe they can finish even higher with all three remaining fixtures against sides within touching distance, starting at Newcastle United today.
“We know if we win these three games it could be a totally different end to the season,” he added. “We want to finish strongly and last weekend’s game against Villa was tough so it was a big three points and hopefully now we can end the season well.
“We have been up and down a bit with results and the manager has been trying different solutions.
“But I’ve learned a lot about myself. When you don’t play regularly which was the case when I first came to Brighton I put pressure on myself because I wanted to be on the team sheet every week, helping the team win games and win trophies. This season has been a real joy to put on a Brighton shirt every week and play my part.”
