Roberto De Zerbi had no complaints about his side’s performance after they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield.
Liverpool turned it around after conceding a second-minute goal to Danny Welbeck thanks to strikes from Luis Diaz and Mo Salah.
“We are not disappointed; we are sad for the result but really pleased with the performance,” said De Zerbi.
“We played against a great team and played a good game. We conceded maybe too many shots. We changed and didn’t mark to man to man and conceded more ball possession, but we had chances to score in the first half and then in the last 15 minutes with [Adam] Lallana, [Danny] Welbeck and [Lewis] Dunk.
“We have to be proud because we played without seven injured players so to compete how we did was very good. I didn’t think we could have done any more.
We are showed we are able to compete for a place in the European competition. We were unlucky with the first goal, it was a confusing situation. You can suffer a lot of shots against a great Liverpool team but in the last 15 minutes we could have scored.
Albion remain ninth but De Zerbi is convinced Albion can maintain a challenge for European football in the remaining nine games of the season, starting at Brentford on Wednesday.
“I have a big respect and I believe so much in my players. I know what the level in my dressing room is and we are working hard to make another happy season for our fans, to reach the target and to compete again in European competition.”
