New signing Jorelyn Carabali believes her recent success with Colombia has given her the confidence to take the next step in her career and play in the WSL for the first time.
The defender helped her country reach the final of the Copa America in 2022, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Brazil. She also helped Colombia reach the quarter-finals of the recent FIFA World Cup.
With those experiences, the 26-year-old believes she learned a huge amount about what it takes to compete at the top of the women’s game.
“It [losing to Brazil] was a big accomplishment for our country, it allowed me to understand that we could achieve a competition like that and aim to win it,” Jorelyn said. “It showed us that we have a goldmine in Colombia with the talent that is coming through the ranks.
“For me personally, it made me realise that I can play at this level. It was my first competition with the national team and I realised I needed to step up every aspect of my game - my habits and my mental preparation - to be ready to come to this league.
“The WSL is a very competitive league. I’ve not been to a game in person, but I’ve watched it and I’ve been motivated to get to the level I am now.
“It’s a huge step up and I want to see improvement in my game, not only for now but for the future.”
Jorelyn’s first aim is to get into the Melissa Phillips’s starting XI after arriving from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro.
“The club is very vibrant and I can feel that. I spoke with [head coach] Mel [Phillips] before I signed, I found her very positive in what she’s trying to build. Since I have been here, she’s been very good with me.
First and foremost I want to consolidate myself in the team. In terms of what I bring, I am passionate about my position and working for my teammates.
“The facilities the club has here make it impossible for you not to step up your own game, so you can compete at this level.”
