We are pleased to announce that Brighton & Hove Albion have signed up to the United Nations Framework for Climate Change (UNFCC) Sports for Climate Action Framework, joining more than 200 sporting organisations from around the world to take action on climate change.
As part of becoming a signatory to the framework, the club has committed to reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, with the aim of reaching Net Zero by 2040. This is in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement which aims to limit global warming less than 1.5C° above the pre-industrial average.
This requires the club to measure its carbon emissions, report annually on progress and to implement a carbon reduction plan whilst following the five climate action principles set out by the UNFCC:
  • Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility
  • Reduce overall climate impact
  • Educate for climate action
  • Promote sustainable and responsible consumption
  • Advocate for climate action through communication
To support progress towards this goal the club have launched their environmental sustainability strategy, MyAlbion MyPlanet, that sets out the club’s vision, key areas to prioritise action and outlines the process to embed sustainability across the club.
The strategy targets six key areas that have been identified to focus action on reducing the environmental impacts from the club’s facilities, operations and supply chain, whilst promoting environmental responsibility amongst staff, fans and other key stakeholders. As well as tackling climate change, the strategy sets out action on other areas of sustainability such as minimising waste, promoting biodiversity and promoting a culture of care for people and planet.
In May the club won a gold award for sustainability at the Football Business Awards in recognition of the progress made already. More information about the measures that have been implemented already can be found on the sustainability page of the club website.
Chief Executive and Deputy Chairman Paul Barber said: “Everyone at Brighton & Hove Albion is highly conscious of the issues surrounding climate change and environmental sustainability and we will continue to work closely with our various partners and stakeholders to minimise our environmental impact.
“As a club, we know we can make a difference with our own initiatives, both now and in the future. This strategy is a great step forward for the club and its fans, we know we can make a difference with our own initiatives, both now and in the future, and we are totally committed to doing so.”
