Albion slipped to a narrow defeat against Liverpool in Sunday’s Women’s Super League match at the Broadfield Stadium.
Ceri Holland, who was later sent off for two bookable offences, scored the only goal early in the second half after intercepting Sophie Baggaley’s pass out.
Albion twice hit the woodwork in the first half but they struggled to create clear chances after the break and defeat leaves us 11th in the table going into the international break.
Guro Bergsvand bursts into the Liverpool box in the second half.
Albion were twice denied by the woodwork in a fairly even first half.
Top scorer Elisabeth Terland tried her luck from 30 yards after Vicky Losada won the ball in midfield and found her teammate. Terland’s shot had keeper Rachel Laws scrambling to her right as the ball struck the base of the post and bounced behind.
Albion have conceded more set-piece goals (8) than any team apart from Bristol City and Liverpool went close to exploiting it on a few occasions, notably just before the break when Sophie Roman Haug met a corner eight yards out with a header which went inches wide.
Poppy Pattinson holds off Ceri Holland.
Albion nearly went ahead in stoppage time, the crossbar denying them this time. Vea Sarri’s effort was blocked and Poppy Pattinson’s cross-shot had Lawless scrambling as it was driven onto the bar.
But it was the visitors who started the second half well and they broke the deadlock after 52 minutes when Baggaley’s attempt to play out backfired with a pass straight to Ceri Holland, who took a touch before driving a right-foot shot into the net from 15 yards.
Albion pressed for an equaliser, but the quality of their final pass or cross often let them down. In the 72nd minute Vicky Losada’s pass put Terland away but with no one in support he shot first-time and dragged it wide.
Vea Sarri and Emma Kullberg.
Moments later Pinto and Terland combined down the left and Terland’s cross only just eluded Katie Robinson, with Grace Fisk doing just enough to put Robinson off.
Julia Zigiotti’s long-range strike was held by Laws and Guro Bergsvand thought she’d levelled with seven minutes to go when she got a slight touch to Vicky Losada’s corner in a crowded six-yard box but the ball flashed inches wide.
Albion continued to press during six minutes of stoppage time and Liverpool finished with ten players after Holland picked up her second yellow card for a foul on Julia Zigiotti. But the equaliser the hosts’ efforts deserved eluded them.
